A SERIES OF MAJOR TRANSITIONS WERE TAKING PLACE IN THE EARLY 1960’S. TEENS DID NOT NECESSARILY FOLLOW THEIR PARENTS PATHS AS THEY WOULD HAVE IN THE PAST. THEY WERE BEING TAUGHT TO THINK FOR THEMSELVES. THEY WERE FORMING SUBCULTURES, FRAGMENTS THAT DID NOT MATCH WITH THE NORMS OF SOCIETY AT THE TIME. MUSIC OFTEN CARRIED THEIR MESSAGES TO THEIR PEERS. HOWEVER ONCE A COMMERCIAL VALUE COULD BE PUT ON THE SUBCULTURE, PERHAPS “TAKING”BORROWING” THE MUSIC OR THE FASHION OR THE PARTICULAR LIFESTYLE, AND COMMERCIALIZING AND MARKETING IT TO THE MASSES, THE SKY WAS THE LIMIT. THE SUBCULTURE BECAME THE CULTURE. THE NEXT GENERATION WOULD NEED TO GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION TO BE SEEN AND HEARD AND WHAT THEY WOULD CREATE WAS ALWAYS NEW AT LEAST TO THEM, ALTHOUGH ALMOST ALWAYS A DERIVATION OF THE NOT QUITE RECENT PAST COULD BE SPOTTED.

ADULT: 1940S TEENS HAD LISTENED TO THESE GREATS, AND CARRIED THEIR IDOLIZATION FORWARD INTO AULTHOOD. NOT THE FAVS OF THEIR CHILDREN…

JAZZ: COMING FROM THE DEEP SOUTH UNSYNCOPATED RYTHMS FOR THE UNSETTLED BLACK YOUTH THAT QUICKLY SPREAD NORTH AND TO EUROPE. THERE WAS SOMETHING SO RIGHT ABOUT IT’S WRONGNESS.

THE BEAT: UNSETTLED YOUTH WONDERING WHAT LIFE WAS ALL ABOUT. HANGING OUT IN COFFEE HOUSES WITH RANDOM PLAYERS PERFORMING, SOMETIMES MUSIC, SOMETIMES POETRY. THESE DISENFRANCHISED WERE SEARCHING FOR A MEANING TO BE, A PURPOSE FOR LIVING.

FOLK: FROM THE PEACEFUL BALLADEERS TO THE VOICES OF PROTEST, IT WAS CARRIED BY THE AIRWAVES AND REACHING THE NEW GENERATION WHO WERE NOT HAPPY WITH THEIR PARENTS AND THEIR MESS.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL: AGAIN ORIGINALLY FROM THE SOUTH, BUT DUE TO RACISM THE ORIGINAL MUSICIANS WERE NOT OFTEN PERMITED TO PERFORM. SO THE MUSIC MAKERS FOUND SOMEONE WHITE WHO COULD CARRY IT FORWARD TO A PRIMARILY YOUNG AND WHITE POPULACE.

POP: THESE 4 CARRIED TO THE NEXT LEVEL. THEIR MUSIC WAS AMIX OF ALL THE ABOVE MAKING IT POPULAR TO MANY, WHILE STILL UNNERVING THE PARENTS
